Fanny Malmberg (b. 1985), is a documentarian based in the Helsinki region. Her work covers themes of the many shapes of existence. She focuses on stories about unique life choices and topics that are easily overlooked in the common discourse showing a diversity of lived realities that often challenge the status quo.
Malmberg works with both video and audio productions. Her films and audio documentaries have been broadcasted by the Finnish public service media company YLE.
As a documentarian Malmberg tries to immerse herself in the view of her subject or main character, see the world through their lens. She works with small crews or alone, often filming herself, letting the camera (or sound recorder) become an extension of her person, being her eyes and ears. She has been strongly inspired by observational documentaries such as Grey Gardens (1975) and The Wolfpack (2015).
In 2021, she founded the independent production company, Campfire Stories Oy, to structure her work with audiovisual productions. Malmberg has also worked as a producer for the performing arts company Chekhov Machine (2023–2025) and has served as treasurer on the board of the online publication Filmvision Finland rf, in addition to working as a staff writer (2024–2025).
Malmberg holds a MA in Philosophy from Åbo Akademi University (2014), and has completed two years of media studies at Axxell folk high school, (2013-2015) At the moment she is expanding her practice into Fine Arts, through a BFA at Novia University of Applied Sciences (2025-2027) and exploring how to incorporate philosophical thoughts on existentialism, posthumanism and ecology in her current work.
